Post-doctoral position(s) in the theory of quantum materials and devices

Chalmers University of Technology

Description

We are looking for one or two postdocs that are interested in theoretical modeling of quantum materials and devices. Your work will be performed in a theory team, in close collaboration with the ongoing experimental work at the Department of Microtechnology and nanoscience (MC2) and Chalmers.

Information about the research project Recently, an umbrella notion of quantum materials have emerged. It encompasses condensed matter systems with emergent electronic properties, either because of strong correlations or topological order. The emergence may be inherent to the material itself, for instance high- temperature superconductors, or engineered through material- and nano-science in heterostructures between different materials. Our own expertise lies in self-consistent studies of unconventional superconductors applied to describing their thermodynamic ground state, transport properties such as charge and heat conductivities, describing tunnelling probes, vortex states and mesocopic devices.

We are curiosity driven and we connect our efforts to ongoing relevant experimental and theoretical activities at Chalmers and elsewhere. Within this project we will develop theoretical methods and numerical algorithms to study complex order and transport in quantum matter and low-dimensional strongly- correlated electron systems. The main focus is on:

i) Unconventional and/or topological superconductivity and superconducting devices, ii) Transport and time-dependent phenomena in nano-structured 2D quantum materials.

Information about the Department of Microtechnology and nanoscience (MC2) The MC2 Department focus our research in the areas of future nano- and quantum electronics, photonics, bio- and nano systems. We house house a state- of-the-art Nanofabrication Laboratory cleanroom facility. The QDP/QT Labs has the most modern equipment for experiments at low temperatures (millikelvins) and with microwaves.

At theApplied Quantum Physics Laboratory (AQP lab), we work on theoretical aspects of future high-performance nano-electronic systems. Our research covers a broad spectrum of problems, everything from the fundamental problems to the very applied ones. We work in close collaboration with experimental groups, both at MC2 and at other universities. Our major research interests cover quantum information processing with superconducting electronics, mesoscopic superconductivity and transport in nanostructures, and graphene and other 2D materials. Major responsibilities Your major responsibility as postdoc is to perform, collaborate and disseminate research within the project. The position will also include supervising and training master and PhD students. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

Qualifications To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must hold a doctoral degree in Physics, Applied Physics, Theoretical Physics or equivalentawarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline (according to the current agreement with the Swedish Agency for Government Employers). You are expected to demonstrate good potential within research and education. We are looking for a motivated person that enjoys solving complex problems in collaboration with others.

Meritorious qualifications: Documented supervision skills. Experience of developing new solution strategies in the description of quantum materials and quantum devices.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Swedish is not a requirement but Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Contract terms This postdoc position is a full-time temporary employment for two years. We offer Chalmers offers a cultivating and inspiring working environment in the coastal city of Gothenburg. Read more about working at Chalmers and our benefits for employees.

Chalmers aims to actively improve our gender balance. We work broadly with equality projects, for example the GENIE Initiative on gender equality for excellence. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.

Application procedure The application should be marked with Ref 20220196 and written in English. The application should be sent electronically and be attached as pdf-files, as below:

CV:(Please name the document as: CV, Surname, Ref. number) including: • CV, include complete list of publications • Previous teaching and pedagogical experiences • Two references that we can contact.

Personal letter:(Please name the document as: Personal letter, Family name, Ref. number) 1-3 pages where you: • Introduce yourself • Describe your previous research fields and main research results • Describe your future goals and future research focus

Other documents: • Attested copies of completed education, grades and other certificates.

Please use the button at the foot of the page to reach the application form. The files may be compressed (zipped).

Application deadline: May 27, 2022
