NIH-FUNDED POSTDOCTORAL POSITION AT MOUNT SINAI SCHOOL OF MEDICINE, NEW YORK, NY

Two NIH-funded postdoctoral positions are available in the laboratory of Dr. Kristina Simonyan in the Department of Neurology at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York. The research emphases of the laboratory is on understanding brain mechanisms of normal and disordered voice and speech production as well as identifying the neurological correlates of primary focal dystonias using a multi-modal neuroimaging approach (fMRI, DTI, high-resolution MRI, PET). The specific project will involve understanding brain abnormalities associated with genetic risk factors in patients with spasmodic dysphonia (or laryngeal dystonia) using a combination of structural and functional neuroimaging techniques and clinico-behavioral testing. The postdoctoral fellow will function as part of a multi-disciplinary team of neuroscientists, geneticists and clinicians.

Qualifications included PhD or MD/PhD in Neuroscience or other relevant areas of biomedical sciences. The ideal candidate should be independent, self-motivated, and have excellent verbal and written communication skills. The candidate should have solid knowledge of image processing using computational (Linux, MATLAB) and statistical (AFNI, FSL, SPM) methods.

The Mount Sinai Medical Center, founded in 1852, is a 1,171-bed, tertiary-care teaching facility acclaimed internationally for excellence in clinical care and research. Located on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, the center encompasses The Mount Sinai Hospital and Mount Sinai School of Medicine. The intellectual environment is rich with other extramurally funded investigators, who are conducting research in the field of movement disorders and neuroscience. Opportunities exist for scientific interactions and collaborations with an extensive program of seminars, symposia and other organized meetings focused on a large array of topics. The shared facilities and resources available for the conduct of neuroimaging studies include state-of-the-art Imaging Science Laboratories (ISL) for image acquisition and processing, electronics, MR microscopy and small animal laboratories. The ISL hosts two research MRI systems – a 1.5 T Siemens Sonata and a 3.0 T Philips Achieva, which are specially equipped to perform high-resolution functional and structural brain imaging. The 3.0 T Philips scanner will be used to acquire data in the above-mentioned studies.
