The position:

As the discovery rate of world-class mineral deposits continues to decline in Australia, increased attention is being focused on exploration methods designed for covered terrains. Our team at CSIRO Earth Science and Resource Engineering is engaging with the mineral exploration industry to develop geochemical and mineralogical techniques for sampling surveys in areas of cover to detect the very far field signatures of ore deposits. To this end we are seeking an early career Earth Scientist with knowledge and some experience in sedimentology/regolith geology and hydrothermal/diagenesis geochemistry. As the role will require interaction with colleagues from a number of scientific disciplines, a good record of collaboration with other researchers, particularly in the areas of geology and geophysics, will be highly regarded.

The successful candidate will be based at CSIRO (Kensington) in Perth, Western Australia, and is expected to be involved in a range of projects depending on research needs. However, the core activity will be exploration geochemistry in Distal Footprints of Ore Deposits research based in the Capricorn Orogen, Western Australia.

Specifically you will:

make an active contribution to the research program in regolith geology;

conduct local to district-scale geochemical orientation and dispersion studies;

engage with key researchers working on the large scale project on Distal Footprints within the Capricorn Orogen;

help to grow the research reputation of the CSIRO team in Distal Footprints and help build CSIRO’s research reputation for integrated and multi-disciplinary science;

publish research results in the peer-reviewed literature and as CSIRO publications;

ensure delivery of projects to agreed research objectives and work programs, on time and within budget;

communicate results within the team, to national and international conferences and to the exploration industry.

Salary:        AUD81K - AUD88K plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will hold (or shortly complete) a PhD degree in a relevant discipline area such as geology, sedimentology or geochemistry.

You will also have:

good interpersonal and communication skills (both oral and written), including the ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary research team;

experience in field and laboratory based research related to element mobility, preferably in ore system settings;

knowledge of weathering processes, sedimentology, hydrothermal systems and metal mobility;

the ability to work in the field in remote areas of Australia;

practical knowledge of analytical tools and software such as ioGAS, GWB, portable XRF, SEM, and familiarity with GIS systems and software.
