Required: PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related field of science. Strong background in analytical chemistry and/or experience with sample preparation techniques and trace analysis of biomarkers in human tissues, blood, or urine. Experience with analytical instrumentation, such as GC- and LC-tandem mass spectrometry and HPLC with UV and fluorescence detection. Collaborative and interpersonal skills, effective oral and written communication skills.

Preferred: Experience in analysis of tobacco or other plant material. Experience in troubleshooting research apparatus/equipment. Experience with, and knowledge of, possible difficulties in the analytical procedures, such as cross-contamination and artefact formation. Experience in supervising junior research staff.

Duties/Responsibilities
A Postdoctoral Associate position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Irina Stepanov in the Masonic Cancer Center, University of Minnesota. Research in the laboratory is focused on the application of analytical biochemistry approaches to the characterization of chemical carcinogen exposure, metabolism, and DNA damage.

This particular position is to conduct research funded by an NIH grant, focusing on tobacco carcinogen exposure and uptake by smokers. The successful candidate will apply existing methods for the analysis of toxic and carcinogenic constituents in tobacco and cigarette smoke, and will develop analytical procedures for the analysis of new constituents (50%). This position is also for investigation of tobacco constituent intake and metabolism by analyzing biomarkers in biological samples collected from tobacco users (50%). Development of analytical procedures for the analysis of new biomarkers, as well as troubleshooting and optimization of existing methods is expected.

Research responsibilities of a Postdoctoral Associate generally involve participation in the design, implementation, and evaluation of research projects. The appointee may participate in preparation and presentation of data to study investigators. The appointee may author, co-author, and otherwise collaborate on reports, conference papers and publications.
