Postdoctoral research appointment in Dr. Greg Findlay’s laboratory to investigate the role of protein phosphorylation in regulating embryonic stem (ES) cells.

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position to work with Dr. Greg Findlay to investigate novel signalling pathways in ES cells. Using targeted phosphoproteomic profiling, we have identified a number of phosphorylation sites that are modified upon ES cell differentiation. This project aims to elucidate the functional role of these phosphorylation sites in ES cells, and identify the biochemical mechanisms by which they are regulated. This project will also apply high-throughput functional screening to identify novel kinases that regulate ES cell fate.

This project will be undertaken in the MRC Protein Phosphorylation and Ubiquitylation Unit (MRC-PPU), based within the College of Life Sciences at the University of Dundee. The MRC-PPU is one of the world’s leading centres studying the role of protein phosphorylation and ubiquitylation in cellular processes and human disease. The successful applicants will deploy a state-of-the-art blend of biochemical, proteomic and high-throughput functional genomic/small molecule approaches. There is also a strong opportunity for interactions with the six major Pharmaceutical companies supporting the Division of Signal Transduction Therapy to accelerate the exploitation of discoveries.

Situated on a beautiful estuary close to some of Scotland’s most spectacular mountain scenery, Dundee offers very affordable living and a perfect blend of coast and countryside. The city is developing into a major cultural hub, which will culminate in the opening of the iconic V&A Dundee Art Gallery in 2015.

Candidate requirements:

• Recent PhD with outstanding academic track record and at least one first authored publication in an internationally recognised peer-reviewed journal
• Strong background in biochemistry and cell & molecular biology is required
• Experience in stem cell techniques is desirable but not essential
• Capable of working in a team, but able to plan and work independently
• Excellent communication skills and knowledge of the English language are essential for this project
