This position is funded by STFC to support the science exploitation of the European Rosetta Mission and requires an experienced researcher familiar with environmental simulation, with a sound understanding of thermal modelling. We will attempt to put the Rosetta lander thermal data into context by relating sensor measurements of temperature and thermal diffusivity to cometary analogue sample structure and composition, thereby establishing to what extent the subsurface energy balance can give rise to chemical alteration of the material of the cometary nucleus.
You will lead a laboratory campaign that runs alongside the on-comet activities of Rosetta and will be guided by the returned spacecraft data. We want to identify how surface activity and subsurface temperatures on a comet are affected by changes in ice structure and composition. You will also be encouraged to develop this program through other techniques and collaborations.
