A postdoctoral position is available in the Stem Cell Biology Group in the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, to investigate the molecular basis of embryonic stem cell self-renewal and differentiation. We are part of the Laboratory (i.e., department) of Molecular Carcinogenesis (LMC) in NIEHS. We have previously identified a list of novel candidate genes that are important for ES cell self-renewal in a large-scale RNAi screen, and we currently investigating their function in ES cells, somatic cell reprogramming, and mouse development. Our studies so far have uncovered several novel mechanisms in the regulation of self-renewal and pluripotency, and we will continue to pursue those directions. In addition, we have generated microRNA-based shRNA vectors and genome-wide shRNA libraries for gene silencing. We have also developed a multiplex method for high-throughput screening using shRNA libraries. We will carry out RNAi screens to identify genes that are important for lineage specification in ESCs in the future.
Applicants must have a doctoral level degree with less than five years of postdoctoral research. Experience in embryonic stem cells and mouse embryology is highly recommended. Competitive stipends are determined by educational degree(s) and number of years of relevant postdoctoral experience.
