We are seeking a postdoctoral research fellow with expertise in modelling for a BBSRC-funded project investigating hormone dynamics within plant roots. The 3-year project is led by Dr Leah Band, with the post starting on the 1st of October 2015, or as soon as possible thereafter. The post holder will be based at the Centre for Plant Integrative Biology, an interdisciplinary research centre for addressing fundamental questions in plant science, and will also be affiliated with the Centre for Mathematical Medicine and Biology within the School of Mathematical Sciences.

The position is part of an interdisciplinary project to understand how the hormone auxin controls plant root phenotype. The role will involve developing mathematical and computational models of auxin transport within multicellular root geometries to investigate how processes at the cell scale control the organ-scale auxin distribution and root growth. These multiscale models will be based on data collected by an experimental postdoc working on the project, and the post-holder will work closely with this postdoc to explore and test model results. The project will involve a range of modelling techniques including vertex-based modelling, using a Python framework established within the group; network modelling using ordinary differential equations; asymptotic analysis to derive continuum descriptions of cell-based models; and parameter estimation to interpret data from fluorescent reporters.

Applicants are required to have excellent modelling skills and should hold or be near completion of a PhD which contains a significant amount of mathematical or computational modelling of biological processes. Expertise in differential-equation models, multiscale modelling, model simulation, parameter optimization or asymptotic analysis would be an advantage. Given the interdisciplinary nature of the project, applicants must have excellent communication skills, have a strong desire to use modelling to answer fundamental biological questions,  and be able to work productively as part of an interdisciplinary team.

This full-time position is available from 1 October 2015 and will be offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of 36 months.
