Postdoctoral Research Scientist

The Division of Surgical Science in the Department of Surgery at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist. Candidate must be a highly motivated and productive researcher who is able to perform independent research associated with assessment of synaptic function and transmission, synaptic vesicle biology, neurophysiology, and brain circuit structure-function analysis. The primary focus of our research is to elucidate cellular and molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration and to develop small molecules for translational research. Candidate must have extensively experience with neurophysiology and electrophysiology and perform patch for pre- and post-synaptic transmission, long-term potentiation in vitro and in vivo animal model, and brain circuit analysis.

Responsibilities of the individual will include:

1) Perform of laboratory research in the area of synaptic degeneration relevant to neurodegeneration, synaptogenesis, using human disease mouse model including Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, and aging, analysis of synaptic structure and function in vitro and in vivo.

2) Perform electrophysiology in brain slices, recording synaptic transmission including long-term potentiation (LTP), patch in neurons in vitro and in vivo transgenic mice.

3) Perform primary neuronal culture, analysis of pre- and post-synaptic function, quantification of synaptic density.

4) Neurophysiology and electrophysiology, animal brain in vitro neuron and vivo image and recording, animal brain surgery, and basic molecular and cellular biology including immunoblotting, immunostaining, confocal images, neuronal culture.

5) Perform virus infect to neuron in vitro and in vivo human disease mouse model. Evaluate the effects of small molecule compounds on synaptic function and morphology alterations

6) Perform literature searches, manage data, analyze experimental results and published data and to write manuscript reporting research funding. 7) Participate to the development of an extramurally funded research program by assisting PIs with NIH grants by developing and generating data and figures

Requirements include:

1) PhD, MD or PhD/MD

2) Experience in Biological Sciences and have at least two-year research experiences in the neurophysiology and electrophysiology and/or cell biology in vitro and in vivo.

3) Strong skills in major biochemistry and cell biology techniques, animal handling, brain injection, primary cultures and quantitative data analysis related to neurophysiology

4) Ability to work independently after a short training period,

5) At least 2-3 publication related to neurophysiology related to synaptic degeneration and synaptic transmission.

We seek highly motivated and productive individuals who enjoy working in a team while concomitantly desiring to pursue their own ideas in a very supportive environment. Columbia University is an Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action Employer.
