Professor – Thomas Kvan
Professor Kvan is the founding Dean of the School of Design at Southern University of Science and Technology. He is a Fellow of Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia, of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, and of the Royal Society of the Arts, the former two were elected in 2005 and the latter in 2021. Previously, he has held positions as Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Campus and Global Development and Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning at the University of Melbourne, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning at the University of Sydney, and Dean of the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Hong Kong. During his time at the University of Melbourne, he established the Melbourne School of Design and founded several multidisciplinary large research initiatives. He holds or has held honorary and advisory appointments at the University of Melbourne, TU Eindhoven, Wuhan University, Xi’an Jiaotong University, Singapore University of Technology and Design, and University of New South Wales.
Professor Kvan is recognized internationally for his pioneering work in design, design learning, digital environments, design management, and virtual heritage. He was the founding co-Director of LEaRN (the Learning Environments Applied Research Network) delivering multidisciplinary research on learning and architecture and was founding Director of AURIN (the Australian Urban Research Infrastructure Network) that developed a national digital infrastructure of urban data to support research and decision making, both networks hosted at the University of Melbourne. He has published over 200 publications in academic, professional, and popular channels and is on the editorial boards of leading journals. Professor Kvan received his Ph.D. in design from Open University, MArch in Computer Applications in Architecture from the University of California, Los Angeles, and MA in architecture from Cambridge University.
Responsibilities
1. Develop the research plan together with the team leader, carry out project research relatively independently and publish high-level academic papers;
2. Assisted the research group in applying for funds, and actively applied for post-doctoral science fund, national natural science foundation of china youth program, and other national, provincial and municipal projects with the support of the research group as the person in charge.
3. Assist the leader of the research group and guide doctoral, master and undergraduate students.
4. Assist the construction and management of the research group.

2. 協(xié)助課題組申請項(xiàng)目基金。在課題組的支持下,作為負(fù)責(zé)人積極申請博士后科學(xué)基金、國家青年自然科學(xué)基金等系列國家及省市級的項(xiàng)目基金。
3. 開展本科、碩士、博士指導(dǎo)工作;
4. 參與課題組的建設(shè)和日常管理工作。
Qualifications
1. Doctoral degree in related area;
2. Relevant experience in design;
3. High proficiency levels in both English and Mandarin languages
4. Proven capability of writing high-quality research papers and project application proposals.
5. Applicants who have published more than two SCI papers are strongly preferred.

Compensation and Benefits
1.Compensation
1) The annual salary of a postdoc is about 330,000 RMB, including 150,000 RMB of Guangdong Province subsidies and 60,000 RMB of Shenzhen living subsidies, and he/she will participate in the schemes of social insurance and housing provident fund according to the relevant regulations of Shenzhen.
2) The basic monthly income of a postdoc is RMB 8,667.
3) If not living on campus or not applying for public rental housing, the postdoc can enjoy a housing subsidy of RMB 2,800 per month.
4) The postdoctoral benefits are distributed with reference to the standard of the University staff within the quota. After the postdocs enter the Mobile Station and pass the proposal assessment, the Shenzhen living subsidies will be transferred directly to the postdoc personal accounts; subsidies will not go through the University. Shenzhen living subsidies are paid quarterly for a total of 2 years. Mid-term assessment will be conducted after 12 months, and the second support fund can be applied after passing the assessment. Early withdrawal from the station requires the postdocs to return the government subsidies in proportion.
5) Other benefits including Festival bonus, meal subsidy is about RMB 10,000 per year.
1. Other Treatment Policies
1) Exceptionally outstanding postdocs can apply for President Excellent Postdoc. If the application is approved, the annual salary can reach 500,000 RMB (including subsidies from Guangdong Province and Shenzhen).
2) The research group provides postdocs with excellent working environment and opportunities for cooperation and exchange both at home and abroad, and the postdocs can enjoy academic exchange funds of 25,000 RMB in total for two years (For postdocs within the quota, academic exchange funds are covered by the University, and for postdocs outside of the quota, academic exchanges funds are covered by the research group).
3) According to the specific research performance of the postdoc, he/she can enjoy the corresponding research performance incentives offered by the College (School)/Department and the subject group.
4) The research group provides sufficient research support and assists the postdocs in applying for the China Postdoctoral Science Foundation, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and research projects at all levels in Guangdong Province and Shenzhen.
5) The research group can assist eligible postdocs in applying for the "Guangdong Overseas Young Postdoctoral Recruitment Program". If a postdoc has obtained a doctoral degree from a university ranked in the top 200 universities in the world (according to the World University Rankings of Times Higher Education, USNEWS, QS, and Academic Ranking of World Universities in the previous year, excluding domestic universities), is engaged in postdoctoral research in a postdoctoral station in Guangdong Province, and has committed to work in the station for more than 2 years, the provincial government will give living subsidies of 600,000 RMB to each eligible postdoc after the application is approved (which is incompatible with the 150,000 RMB living subsidy provided by Guangdong Province, and whether it is compatible with the 60,000 RMB living subsidy provided by Shenzhen shall be subject to the regulations of Shenzhen). For the postdoc who has received funding from this program, will sign a work agreement or labor contract with an employer in Guangdong Province and promise to work in Guangdong for more than 3 years after leaving the station, Guangdong Provincial Government will provide housing subsidies of 400,000 RMB.
6) Postdocs who choose to stay in Shenzhen to engage in research and sign labor (employment) contracts with enterprises and institutions in Shenzhen for more than 3 years after leaving the station can apply for Shenzhen Postdoctoral Research Fund. Shenzhen Municipal Government gives each postdoc an annual research fund of 100,000 RMB for 3 years in total(subject to the regulations of Shenzhen).
7) We will actively recommend outstanding postdocs and assist them in applying for the position of research assistant professor at SUSTech.
